Dopey Challenge – Walt Disney World Marathon Recap

I was really nervous about the Walt Disney World Marathon. Not only would this be my first marathon, but I had already done three races over the previous three days. I had no idea how it would go, including whether I’d even be able to make it across the finish line. I had trained hard for months and hit all my mileage, but when the day finally came, anything could happen. But here’s what did happen:

Dopey Challenge – Walt Disney World Half Marathon Recap

The Walt Disney World Half Marathon has special meaning for me. A few years ago, I visited Walt Disney World and it just happened to be the day of the half marathon. I saw everyone running through Epcot and was thoroughly impressed. But I couldn’t even run around the block at that point and said “I’d never be able to do that. Looks like fun though.” I also thought the people running in costumes were insane. Although I’ve run a few half marathons since that day, this was the day I planned to proved myself wrong and actually run the Walt Disney World Half Marathon. And the costumes? Well, I can’t say I’m not insane, but I was doing that too.

Dopey Challenge – Walt Disney World 10K Recap

Of all the races in the Dopey Challenge, I was most excited about the Walt Disney World 10K. I was feeling a little too daunted by my first marathon to be excited about that race.

This race conveniently fell on my birthday, so I planned to celebrate. Just like in the Walt Disney World 5K the day before, I planned to take this race slow and fun, with plenty of picture stops. And for an extra bit of fun, I chose a Mad Hatter costume and called the race my “Birthday Unbirthday Party.”

Dopey Challenge – Walt Disney World Family Fun Run 5K Recap

The key to an endurance event like the Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World is careful pacing. Four races in four days is a lot of running and you want to make sure your legs up for it all. My Dopey Challenge strategy was to run the first three races slowly and casually to save my energy for the marathon on Sunday.

I took that strategy to heart for the Walt Disney World Family Fun Run 5K. They call it a fun run and I sure had fun. I went into the race planning to stop at every picture stop to give my legs and feet plenty of rest between miles. Read more about the Walt Disney World Family Fun Run 5K →
